April is the month of the diamond.

Birthstones represent the month of our birth, and this month, the diamond represents April.

Here at BoBen Designs we love diamonds. We use all kinds of diamonds in our designs, everything from traditional, to yellow, to champagne diamonds; even the sizes and cuts of our diamonds vary, everything from multi-carat centerpieces to small accents.

According to the American Gem Society, the origin of birthstones are still unknown. But many speculate that it dates back to the Biblical times when breastplates belonging to priests were decorated with 12 assorted gemstones that corresponded with astrology.

However, in 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers commercialized the concept of the birthstone by formally assigning a dedicated gemstone to each of the twelve months in the calendar. Hence the modern understanding of the birthstone.

According to Forbes.com, these are the birth months and their corresponding gemstone:

  • January: Garnet

  • February: Amethyst

  • March: Aquamarine

  • April: Diamond

  • May: Emerald

  • June: Pearl or Alexandrite

  • July: Ruby

  • August: Peridot

  • September: Sapphire

  • October: Tourmaline or Opal

  • November : Topaz or Citrine

  • December : Tanzanite, Zircon or Turquoise

Like many minerals, diamonds are also known to have healing properties. According to the American Gem Society, during the Middle Ages, diamonds were thought to hold healing powers with the ability to cure ailments stemming from the pituitary gland and brain. According to the same article, during the same time period, people believed that heating crystals and taking them to bed were thought to draw out the harmful toxins that were crippling the body.

Diamonds were no exception. It was believed that diamonds could have an effect on an individual’s balance and clarity and could boost your energy when combined with other crystals like amethyst.

Just recently there was a revival of this trend, with Net-a Porter citing celebrity influencers like Lady Gaga and fashion houses like Balenciaga that have used crystals in their brands. This is because the diamond is considered light, not as in weight, but as in clarity. It’s considered brilliant and a source of life force.

This is probably why the diamond is also the stone that is most commonly used in engagement rings. Around the world, the diamond has been universally accepted as a sign of love and commitment for partners. It is even the standard for gift-giving between family members and close friends.

So come celebrate the month of the diamond with us!
